booting up windows assigned c:\ to one of the drives and f:\ to the other
and marked one as active and the other as system

messing around with the raid controller somehow removed all the partitions on the c:\ volume

so i had to get the f:\ to boot - which it would but after logging in it would log me off

then i search for windows server 2003 logon logoff loop and found this (actually a pdf of this!) - which worked!!

http://www.tech-archive.net/Archive/Windows/microsoft.public.windows.server.general/2006-02/msg01237.html

Due to the various manipulations you performed, your system
drive letter is now something other than C:. The easiest solution
is probably to delete all current drive letter references and let
Windows re-assign them. Get background from http://filemakerproandexcelodbcsolution.blogspot.com/

1. From the FileMaker 11 Advanced CD, open the xDBC folder, and the ODBC Client Driver Installer, and run the FileMaker ODBC.mpkg. This will install the FileMaker ODBC.bundle in the /Library/ODBC Folder

2. From the http://www.iodbc.org/dataspace/iodbc/wiki/iODBC/Downloads, Download the appropriate Mac OS X SDK, for my 10.5 Mac I installed iodbc-sdk-3.52.7-macosx-10.5.dmg.

3. I launched FileMaker Pro 11, created a new database file "Untitled.fp7" with one field (Name) and two records "josh" and "Bob".

4. A dialog comes up asking 'Do you want the application "fmxdbc_listener.bundle" to accept incoming network connections?" - I said Allow.

5. I pulled down the File menu and selected "Sharing -> ODBC/JDBC..."

5. I turned on ODBC Sharing, selected "Untitled.fp7" in the lower left, and set ODBC/JDBC access to "All Users", and clicked "OK".

7. I launched iODBC Administrator and clicked the "Add" button and selected the FileMaker ODBC driver and clicked Finish.

8. Then the FileMaker DSN Configuration window pops open. Click continue. Then enter a name for this DSN - I entered "Untitled"

9. For which host it defaults to localhost - be sure to check the box for "Connect to host to obtain the names of available databases"

10. In the next screen if all is good the name of the database "Untitled" should appear in the drop down, if not check the above steps again. Click continue. And then done. You are back in the iODBC Administrator - go to the System DSN tab to see your connection.

11. In Excel, open a new file and go to Data > Get External Data... > New Database Query...

12. Select System DSN from the tab at the top and select the DSN you created in the ODBC Administrator. Select your data source and press Test.

13. Enter in your username and password for your database, which by default is Admin with no password.

14. If you do get a connection, congratulations, you can press OK and carry on through into writing a SQL query by clicking OK. You should get the user pass dialog again - enter Admin with no password.

15. The Microsoft query tool comes up - click the show tables button to show the window that has the Untitled table. Click the add table button.

16. Click the SQL View button - it should have "SELECT Untitled.name FROM Untitled" - click Test! - you should see "josh" and "bob". Click the Return Data button.

17. The Returning External Data to Microsoft Excel dialog comes up - click properties, and uncheck "Use Lis Manager", then in Data Layout uncheck "Include Field names" and click ok, and then click ok again.

18. Introduction

The Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) is a distributed file system designed to run on commodity hardware... HDFS is highly fault-tolerant and is designed to be deployed on low-cost hardware.

2. NameNode and DataNodes

HDFS has a master/slave architecture. < fail >An HDFS cluster consists of a single NameNode< /fail >, a master server that manages the file system namespace and regulates access to files by clients.

3. Metadata Disk Failure

< fail >The NameNode machine is a single point of failure for an HDFS cluster.< /fail > If the NameNode machine fails, manual intervention is necessary. Currently, automatic restart and failover of the NameNode software to another machine is not supported.

Conclusion: Not fault tolerant.

Solution: Use DNS server architecture and potentially code and binaries to implement a NameNode that is not a single point of failure, does not need manual intervention.

On call hours

I am on call 25x8. space

wish: i started working on this design pattern 2009/11/09. i would like to it grow.

facts:
- simple rules are needed to govern an evolving system that is expected to live for many generations
- all virtual machines are knights
- all kings are knights
- only 1 king may live
- only the king may wear the crown
- the crown is the public ip or eip
- each knight operates autonomously
- uses existing tools / code
- each court / kingdom (knight / king set) uses it's own USER ACCOUNT to identify / query / census citizens
- example. ec2-keys are stored in knights so they can query for citizenship

PATTERNS:

knight pattern - should i take the crown?
first do i have it already?
who is the king?
then is the king fit? does the king survive my attack? is the king fit to serve?
kill the king!
take the crown!
make a clone

knight pattern - should i kill you?
can you survive my attack? are you fit to serve?
then die!
make a clone

knight pattern - should i make a clone?
if i am the oldest is there no one younger than me?
make a clone

these 3 rules seem to handle all failure states
<img width='1' height='1' (marathon's everun, stratus ftServer, vmware's vspshere) are way beyond the reach of most small companies

goal: get sub 4 hour disaster recovery
goal: get autonomous self healing recovery
goal: use commodity hosting
goal: use off the shelf components
goal: "practice failure" technique compatible (contact josh)
<br survive application failure

the above are common - everun, ftServer, vsphere all handle multi failure points

BUT they don't encapusalate network failure - more vendors are needed - network vendors (at least two) - but network hardware vendors etc etc etc

but your too small to have redundant networks and BGP routing so you put your servers in a data centre

BUT everun, ftServer, vpshere don't heal themselves / recover from the failed / degraded state - ie. software can't fix hardware - a process can't replace a failed raid card, hard drive, power supply, nic, or cable.

UNLESS we use libcloud - http://incubator.apache.org/libcloud/ or equivalent (simple cloud php api) with the Before turning on your computer, sit down with a blank piece of paper and decide what will make this day highly successful. What can you realistically accomplish that will further your goals and allow you to leave at the end of the day feeling like you've been productive and successful? Write those things down.

Now, most importantly, take your calendar and schedule those things into time slots, placing the hardest and most important items at the beginning of the day. And by the beginning of the day I mean, if possible, before even checking your email. If your entire list does not fit into your calendar, reprioritize your list. There is tremendous power in deciding when and where you are going to do something.

In their book The Power of Full Engagement, Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz describe a study in which a group of women agreed to do a breast self-exam during a period of 30 days. 100% of those who said where and when they were going to do it completed the exam. Only 53% of the others did.

In another study, drug addicts in withdrawal (can you find a more stressed-out population?) agreed to write an essay before 5 p.m. on a certain day. 80% of those who said when and where they would write the essay completed it. None of the others did.

If you want to get something done, decide when and where you're going to do it. Otherwise, take it off your list.

STEP 2 (1 minute every hour) Refocus. Set your watch, phone, or computer to ring every hour. When it rings, take a deep breath, look at your list and ask yourself if you spent your last hour productively. Then look at your calendar and deliberately recommit to how you are going to use the next hour. Manage your day hour by hour. Don't let the hours manage you.

STEP 3 (5 minutes) Review. Shut off your computer and review your day. What worked? Where did you focus? Where did you get distracted? What did you learn that will help you be more productive tomorrow?

The power of rituals is their predictability. You do the same thing in the same way over and over again. And so the outcome of a ritual is predictable too. If you choose your focus deliberately and wisely and consistently remind yourself of that focus, you will stay focused. It's simple.

This particular ritual may not help you swim the English Channel while towing a cruise ship with your hands tied together. But it may just help you leave the office feeling productive and successful.

And, at the end of the day, isn't that a higher priority?

data integration!

first i tried open talend. free right? training? $12k. documentation? where? what? support for wsdl? forum posts negative.

searching - altova from vienna - has mapforce.

install demo.

save wsdl file to desktop.

build mapping.

try to run.

oops it targets java or c#.

install eclipse. install visual studio 2008 C#.

2 hours later - compile c# code - it runs! success!

frustration

1. client needs filemaker 10 server setup asap
2. two servers i have ordered have failed in various aspects
3. fine - i will use my laptop till the 3rd server arrives
4. so i will temporarily use two xp boxes - one for home and one for work
5. ???
6. frustration
6.1 i want to use 1920 x 1200 - the old dell optiplex gx270 doesn't support that it's intel 82865g controller can't handle 1920 x 1200 at 60Hz - argh! i hate running this 24" lcd in less than it's full res - it is soo wrong
6.2 plugging my itouch into the usb port doesn't start charging it! i guess i have to install itunes to charge my hardware? They do however list the MAC OS drivers for the Scansnap S510 on the Japanese language site, but as you may expect, the program is also in Japanese. The directions that follow are to get the Scansnap S510 working under MAC OS and in English language.

1. Download the Scansnap Manager software for the S510M (ScanSnap_V22L11.dmg, which you can find here http://www.fujitsu.com/global/support/computing/peripheral/scanners/drivers/mac.html) and install

2. Use Finder to locate the Scansnap Manager.app file -> right click or apple click it and select "Show Package Contents" -> double click to open the Contents folder -> double click to open the Resources folder

3. Copy the English.lproj folder to the desktop

4. Open the Applications folder and drag the Scansnap folder to the trash, then empty the trash

5. Now that we have the English Language folder for the Scansnap Manager software, we can go ahead and install the Japanese Snansnap Manager for the S510 under MAC OS, so open the Japanese site here http://scansnap.fujitsu.com/jp/downloads/mac.html and scroll down until you find the ScanSnap Manager for Mac section. Find the correct MAC OS version and download the corresponding ScanSnap_V21L20.dmg file

6. Install Scansnap Manager from the newly downloaded file from the Japanese site (if you have an error saying that the software cannot be installed, make sure you have uninstalled/trashed the previous S10M version, making sure you have emptied the trash, maybe restart your MAC after uninstall/trash)

7. Once the software is installed you should be able to use your Scansnap S10 without problem (except that the Scansnap Manager program is in Japanese)

8. Copy the English.Iproj folder from your desktop into the Resources folder (follow the direction on how to get there in step 2)

9. Quit the Scansnap Manager

10. Start Scansnap Manager and the program should now run in English

How to reasonably quote a 100+ screen system to determine budget viability

The developers will code each screen according to the following legend:

Search screen 2 to 3 hours design, 4 to 6 hours development
Simple screen 2 to 4 hours design, 4 to 8 hours development
Reports 3 to 4 hours design, 6 to 8 hours development
Standard screen 4 to 8 hours design, 8 to 16 hours development
Complex screen 8 to 16 hours design, 16 to 24 hours development

The developers need the screens prioritized by the client. It is more important for the implementation to be simpler than the interface. Simplicity is the most important consideration in a design.
Correctness
the design must be correct in all observable aspects. It is slightly better to be simple than correct.
Consistency
the design must not be overly inconsistent. Consistency can be sacrificed for simplicity in some cases, but it is better to drop those parts of the design that deal with less common circumstances than to introduce either implementational complexity or inconsistency.
Completeness
the design must cover as many important situations as is practical. All reasonably expected cases should be covered. Completeness can be sacrificed in favor of any other quality. In fact, completeness must be sacrificed whenever implementation simplicity is jeopardized. Consistency can be sacrificed to achieve completeness if simplicity is retained; especially worthless is consistency of interface.

Gabriel argues that early Unix and C, developed by Bell Labs, are examples of this design approach.

Custom Software FAQ

Customers
Q: Can you make a customer happy?
A: No. It is up to the customer to decide. Nothing you do can make a customer happy.

Q: What are the three biggest risks to client satisfaction?
A: Budget
B: Timeline
C: Specifications

Q: How many of three risks can the client tolerate losing?
A: One.

Projects
Q: why can an expert do job faster than non-expert?
A: because the expert knows what jobs he does NOT have to do.

Q: Are there going to be difficulties in every project?
A: Yes.

Q: How should project difficulties be handled?
A: They need to be managed immediately.

Q: What are the steps to managing difficulties?
A: Describe the difficulty as it pertains to changing expectations about the delivery of:
1. Budget
2. Timeline
3. Specfications
B: Describe what will happen if the difficulty is ignored.
C: Describe at least two solutions to the difficulty
1. Pros and Cons of solution
2. Cost of Solution

Q: Why do we deliver a budget to the client?
A: So the client can decide if the cost vs risk vs reward ratio meets their requirements.

Q: Why do we deliver a timeline to the client?
A: So the client can plan for the arrival of their project.

Q: Why do we deliver a specification to the client?
A: So the client commits to single irrevocable course of action.

Q: How do you make a cost to build?
A: You record all the steps in an existing process, you record all the requirements of the process, you create a picture of what those screens should look like, and you put a price next to each item and add up all the prices.

Q: How do you make a budget?
A: You record how much it costs to perform the current process, then you set a productivity improvement factor that the business would pay to have, and the business puts a price on that improvement.

Q: What are three good reasons to make custom software?
A: It's cheaper than buying, what you want / need doesn't exist, and / or you want to own / control the code.

Q: How to make custom software?
A: Follow these steps:
1. establish business case for project - why are we doing this
2. establish top down budget - how much can we spend and still save money
3. inventory current process - what are we doing now
4. inventory business requirements - what does the process require
5. complete use cases - what do the users need to be able to do
6. create wireframes - what do the forms need to look like
7. reconcile wireframes with above
8. cost out the wireframes - see http://neocodesoftware.blogspot.com/2009/04/how-to-reasonably-quote-100-screen.html

sections to come:

Where to make custom software
How to maintain custom software
How to maintain old (5+ years) custom software
How to maintain very old (10+) custom software
How to maintain ancient (15+) custom software
How to pay for custom software

how to set the page length of the epson dfx 5000 dot matrix printer

i want to print pdx and fedex multi part forms. so i got a dot matrix printer of craigslist from a travel company that doesn't print tickets anymore since eTickets are emailed.

so...

how to set the page length of the epson dfx 5000 dot matrix printer

1. http://files.support.epson.com/pdf/dfx5k_/dfx5k_u1.pdf

ESCC0
Format:
Set Page Length in Inches
ASCII code: ESC C 0 n
Decimal: 27 67 0 n
Hexadecimal : 1B 43 00 n
Comments:
Sets the page length to n inches. (i also own several intel mac minis, the 17" imac g4, g4 towers etc - but they are "work" computers and not "mine")

i love macs - but i hate the touch

and 6 months ago i bought a touch

Crime Against humanity #1 - it doesn't have copy and paste.

for this reason alone there should be class action lawsuit, jail time, and televised painful public executions.

or perhaps in the interest of saving the planet - the executives should be used a human mine detectors, clearing mined fields in the war torn parts of the world.

you might think this is ridiculous and extreme - of all the things to get work up about - copy and paste missing from a crappy $600 touch screen computer that fits in your shirt pocket.

you might say, josh - there are bigger issues to get upset about.

you might say - what about the oceans dying, the erosion of farm land, the drying up of the aquifers, and the mass extinctions occuring right now.

i would say - you're right.

but those things don't make me want to drive hot pokers into my eyes when i am trying to send an email from the itouch.

Crime Against humanity #2 it doesn't have undo

No undo? that's insane!

Crime Against humanity #3 the magnifying glass / lack of arrow keys

not only is useless near the edges of the screen - it doesn't magnify enough and it is all blurry

Crime Against humanity #4 the keyboard sucks

The keyboard sucks in soo many ways.

a) it has several different modes depending on what application you are using - no consistency
b) it doesn't go wide screen when you tilt it - i want bigger keys - go wide
c) it doesn't have the T9 cellphone dictionary or any other kind of intelligent feature to guess what word i am typing and then let me pick it
d) the keys are too small

Crime Against humanity #5 the screen tilts when you don't want it too and doesn't tilt when you want it too

at first i thought this way a problem with the accelerometer but then i got a game (labyrinth lite - http://www.macworld.com/article/134966/2008/08/labyrinth.html?lsrc=rss_main) and the accelerometer is very responsive - so why is the tilt so screwed up???

Crime Against humanity #6 the 2.0 firmware Safari stability is terrible

when safari crashes, it just reboots the app, like nothing happened. like it didn't just fail and crash. that sucks.

Crime Against humanity #7 safari runs faster on the itouch / iphone than a 1ghz g4 with 768MB of RAM

huh? how is this possible? using safari on the 1ghz g4 is a soul destroying experience for the adhd afflicted. i need to open 30 tabs at once and jump between them quickly!!!

how i made a video mag

i put bookmarks to the videos on the desktop
i opened quicktime broadcaster for audio and vide
i installed slimserver so i could put bookmarkts to my audio files on the desktop
i put bookmarks to my fast tracks on the desktop
i introduced the show
i introduced the episode
i introdcued future episodes
i credited the show and the show products

macosxhints.com -
